Legislative Program In
Washington, D.C., IEC has a dynamic
legislative program covering a wide range
of issues while providing a strong presence and
unified voice on Capitol Hill. As a member, you can
read about IEC's monitoring and lobbying activities
at the Federal level where your representatives are
hard at work representing your interests. Some of
the work they do includes:
Additionally,
your local representatives are monitoring activities
at the Missouri and Kansas state levels, acting as
your voice for fair treatment of the Independent
Electrical Contractor. Some
of the important issues that impact your business
that IEC is involved in include:

Training
and Education Issues
-
Working
to pass amendments to the National Labor Relations
Act to protect the "Open Shop" philosophy
and the right to work, and stop Union
"salting" abuses.

Raising
the jurisdictional threshold of the National Labor
Relations Board.

Active
lobbying campaigns on regulatory issues that
positively and negatively effect your business.

Monitoring
state legislative activity and working closely with
each IEC state chapter, focusing on Project Labor
Agreements, Utility Deregulation, Apprentice Ratios,
and Codes and Standards.
Some
of IEC's successes
-
IEC
was instrumental in passing H.R. 1441, the Truth in
Employment Act of 1999 out of its subcommittee,
Employer and Employee Relations.

More
than 200 IEC members participated in the 1999
Legislative Conference. IEC members made more than
1,000 appointments on Capitol Hill.

The
IEC Good Government Political Action Committee
raised more than $145,000 in 1998-99. The IEC-PAC
contributed more than $125,000 to House and Senate
incumbents and challenger candidates for
Congressional elections.

IEC
worked to pass NLRB Jurisdictional Threshold
language (H.R. 1620) in the House Appropriations
Committee.

IEC
was instrumental in a coalition working to cut the
NLRB's budget by $11.7 million in FY2000.
-
IEC
was a key member of the Construction Coalition that
worked to pass H.R. 1987, the Attorney's Fees bill
in committee and on the House floor.
