IEC's History

IEC was founded in 1958.  The primary goal of the group is to consider and deal by all lawful means with common problems of management, distribution, employment, and financial functions of the electrical construction industry. It also is  dedicated to fostering cooperative action in advancing by all lawful means the common purposes of its members, and to promote activities designed to enable the industry to be conducted with the greatest economy and efficiency.

A firm believer in quality training, in 1972, IEC sought and received B.A.T. approval for a set of national pattern standards for training electrical apprentices.

IEC national headquarters moved to Washington, D.C. in 1980. In 1989, having grown to a national association with 28 chapters, IEC hired its first full-time Executive Vice President.

Throughout the 1990s, IEC continued to grow gradually, developing new programs and acquiring more members and chapters. By 1995, IEC had 50 chapters with approximately 2,000 apprentices in training.

Currently, IEC has become a full-service national trade association with 76 chapters, 3,600 electrical contractors employing nearly 85,000 electrical workers and more than 10,000 apprentices in training. IEC's programs range from apprentice, journeyworker, and contractor training and education to workforce safety, insurance and government affairs.
